Margherita nacque cieca e storpia. Appena l’intelligenza della bimba cominciò ad aprirsi, si vide però di quali tesori di grazia era stata arricchita. Ai genitori, benché nobili e ricchi, parve un peso troppo grave e umiliante questa figlioletta priva della vista e d’ogni bellezza, e cosi un giorno, dopo averla condotta alla vicina Città di Castello per implorare la guarigione da un santo francescano lì molto venerato, vedendo che le loro suppliche restavano senza risposta, l’abbandonarono in chiesa, e se ne tornarono a casa. Margherita non pianse, non si disperò, e con un atto eroico di completa fiducia in Dio, lo invocò, quale Padre degli orfani. Fu questo il principio di mirabili ascensioni che a poco a poco fecero risplendere intorno alla povera abbandonata, un’aureola di santità. Dopo prove e umiliazioni ricevette con giubilo l‘Abito del Terz’Ordine di San Domenico, raggiungendo nella sua breve vita di trentatré anni un grado di altissima perfezione, tutta conforme all’ideale dell’Ordine. La coraggiosa penitenza dette vigore al suo spirito per applicarsi ad una perseverante preghiera, che aprì a lei i tesori della celeste sapienza. Aveva imparato a memoria l’intero Salterio e ne spiegava i più reconditi sensi. Fece, senza rumore, un gran bene alle anime, e tutti ricercavano la sua santa compagnia. Fu devotissima del Mistero dell’Incarnazione, e dopo la sua morte, avvenuta il 13 aprile 1320, le furono trovate nel cuore tre perle, sulle quali erano scolpite l’immagine di Gesù, della Madonna e di S. Giuseppe. Il suo corpo incorrotto si trova nella chiesa di San Domenico a Città di Castello. Papa Paolo V, nel 1609, concesse ai Domenicani di quella città la Messa e l’Ufficio propri. Il 6 aprile 1675 Papa Clemente X estese tale privilegio a tutto l’Ordine. Nel 1988 il locale Vescovo di Urbino e Città di Castello l’ha proclamata Patrona Diocesana dei non vedenti.
